Ouch! Or when ergonomics becomes... a question of elbows.
Last Sunday, our weekly bike ride took a somewhat unexpected turn. A fall, a dislocated elbow, a cast, a splint... and here I am with my right arm immobilized for at least a week.
Since then, I've been navigating, typing, scrolling... with my left hand.
And I'm discovering another reality of interfaces: some suddenly become less accessible, less intuitive, even frustrating.
When I design an interface, I don't necessarily think about these situations - nor about those who, by nature or necessity, don't use their dominant hand, nor about those whose abilities differ temporarily or permanently. I tend to believe we can always learn from situations, especially when they're imposed on us. So maybe this little accident is a stimulus to rethink our interfaces - more inclusive, more flexible, more tolerant to the unexpected.
And you - have you ever tested your creations in unusual conditions?
